Social media is spoiling the spirit of education

Go to any college canteen or watch any teenager and what do you see? Necks bent, intent on the small screen of a mobile phone. Not looking for knowledge or reading something worthwhile, but going through their social media accounts, responding and sending messages or marking 'likes', 'dislikes', or something of the sort. Ask the parent of any teenager what the teenager spends most time on. The answer is social media.

Social media, which should have been a boon to connect people, has now become a curse. It is drawing students away from their books. It is spreading fake news, fake videos and fake scientific assertions, which a lot of people believe. The youth fear that they will be left behind if they do not check their phones every few minutes. Result: A total neglect of studies and consequent failures. The feeling of wanting to do better than the others in the social world pushes the impressionable youngsters into neglecting their studies and doing other things. When they wake up and realize what has happened, it is often too late. So, shouldn't there be a curb on social media in some way or the other?

A balanced Diet

'We are what we eat. I had not thought that this statement was true till I went through an experience myself.

Like all teenagers, I used to love junk food. Then I tripped and broke my leg and was confined to my bed. My food was made at home by a strict grandmother and I was not allowed to have any junk food. I was given traditional, healthy food - and at the end of the month, I was rosy-cheeked and bursting with health. The doctor pronounced me fit and fine.

It was then that I realized the importance of good food and nutrition. I realized that a balanced diet, with sufficient fruits, pulses and fresh vegetables, is indeed rewarding. I understood that I must not get influenced by ads and gorge on fast food, which is processed and has nothing but empty calories.

Therefore, I would like to suggest to all of you out there - take care of your diet. If you want to eat sugary cakes and fried chips, do so - but in moderation. Never miss meals or survive on canteen food. Never get taken in by ads. Cook at home, and take care of what you put in your food. It pays, believe me.

(3) "Necessity of Social Awareness" regarding Cleanliness/ Hygiene.     (March '22)

Necessity of Social Awareness about Hygiene

One important point that emerged from the Covid pandemic was the need to have the utmost hygiene and cleanliness around us. All of us tried to maintain cleanliness during the pandemic; we washed our hands umpteen times, stopped spitting indiscriminately and disinfected our homes and even the roads.

Now that the pandemic is over, we should not slip back to our original ways. We should still maintain the high levels of cleanliness that we did during the past year. Otherwise, our general health will be affected.

To make everyone aware of this, electronic and social media should take up the issue. Posters should be regularly put up everywhere and educational institutions should include hygiene in the syllabus. Health marshals should be appointed in every area to keep an eye on the cleanliness of the surroundings. Strict punishment should be meted out to those who litter public places and those who spit.

We have shown that we can keep our surroundings clean if we wish to. We are just careless and indifferent. So now we have to be forced into it. For we all know well that cleanliness is next to godliness.

'Yoga - A practice for better living'

I don't think that there is any doubt about the importance of good health. We all know that health is wealth. Yet, how many of us follow the rules which will keep us healthy?

We must be healthy both in body and in mind. We must not only eat nutritious food but also exercise regularly. The best exercise today is Yoga. It can be followed by anyone and all that we need is a few square feet of space in our own homes. No need of expensive gyms or gardens with jogging tracks.

Yoga keeps not only the body fit and healthy but also the mind. The breathing exercises that accompany it refresh the soul and mind. It is well known that yoga also reduces stress - and who can say today that they don't have any stress? Meditation helps one to focus on one's work and maintain a positive attitude. Best of all, yoga has been tried and tested for hundreds of years by our ancestors and it has been known to succeed. So start doing it today - with care and moderation, of course!
